Streetwear is not Dead

By Matt Dronkers

Fashion is something that goes on changing with the course of the time. In the past, the clothing style imitated the standard of that era. But today we have wide range of choice in fashion. As a result, we have got a distinct style of fashion in urban clothing industry called streetwear.

The life styles of the surrounding streets are generally reflected in streetwear garments. Cultural backgrounds of the street and its surrounding locality find their best expressions in streetwear. One can find a range of qualitative products in streetwear. It also includes urban topics like graffiti.

The germ of streetwear clothing style lies in distant past something around 1980s. A movement called punk was very much popular at that time which gave the way to hip-hop culture. For this reason both of them have similarities.

Shawn Stussy was the inspirational name behind streetwear. He worked as a local surfboard shaper of Laguna Beach in California. He used his own logo for his surfboard designs and after that for the very first time he printed his logo on t-shirts. From that time onwards, streetwear genre has gone under a sea-change.

What is remarkable for hip-hop culture is its being self-expressive in nature. Streetwear, like hip-hop, seeks to have expression of its own concepts. Clothing designers express their feelings in terms of designs they draw for garments. So it is designers' expression, but it becomes the expressions of those who wear them too.

In the fashion industry of garments, streetwear marks its position and continues to encourage designers of today. One of the most important thing they need to remember is to maintain quality that streetwear reflects.

Today Streetwear has almost become a synonym for fashion. It takes inspiration from the traditional look and style of the past at the one hand and modern youth culture of today at the other. It tends to be the fusion of these two traditional and modern outlooks. For example, one can wear suit one day or can prefer to wear well designed streetwear t-shirts the next day.
