The Invention Of The Board Short

By James McFadden

Beach wear will never be complete without board shorts. Not only are they a regular sight near the water, but are also part of other sports and casual wear. Looking no different from knee length pants, these surfer shorts are baggier in nature but stay compact and light.

Extending beyond normal beach wear, board shorts have been adopted by people living in warmer weather as part of their daily attire. The baggy design and material used lend comfort to the wearer with airy internals. This is also partly why they are now mandatory for all water sports fans, as they dry extremely fast.

There are other uses for these bermuda-like pants. Fight sports have seen an increasing surge of grapplers who are choosing them over traditional long pants. They prefer the maximum freedom of movement when used in highly physical activities.

Some of the common features of this clothing wear are waist ties that are adjustable. The comfort fly also comes with easy washing of the shorts. As they are mostly worn by surfers, board shorts normally spot colorful designs that catch the eye.

Paddle shorts are another form that prevent friction injuries due to high contact water sports. A layer of durable water repellant is over used both internally and externally. This protects sportsmen like paddlers and canoeists from suffering wear and tear due to the nature of their sports.

Todos Twill polyester and polyester supersuede are increasingly used in the making of board shorts. Supersuede, for example, helps to provide many of the benefits discussed and little wonder they have become a popular choice.

Surfers generally tend to opt for the long standing brands of Billabong, Hurley and Roxy board shorts. All companies produce both men's and women's designs as the clothing is high popular with people of all ages, sex and sizes. Even larger size designs have been made for the extra market.

Board shorts are now widely available through the Internet. The low overhead allows them to be sold at much more attractive prices than in retail stores. This has continued to contribute to their increasing popularity and use.
