The Embroidery Process Made Simple

By Dean Zellman

Embroidery is one of the most popular ways of imprinting a design or logo onto garments. It provides a long lasting and professional looking finish. Typically an embroiderer will use a needle and colored thread to stitch the design or lettering onto the chosen garment. These days the majority of embroidery work will be done using a machine and a digitized file.

Embroidery machines use digitized files

The first step in embroidery is to digitize the embroidery image into a file, which can be read by the embroidery machine. Creating a digitized file is where the image is converted into a computer file which directs the embroidery machine how to stitch the image. The quality of this digitized file will determine the quality of the final embroidery. So it is important to make sure you have a high quality digitized file before starting the actual embroidery. Some images will be difficult to digitized so make sure to discuss this with your embroiderer. Using graphics programs, such as Adobe Photoshop or Corel Draw, to obtain computer generated graphics will result in a better quality digitized image. And as I said, this will result in better quality final embroidery.

Design Editing

Now that the digitized file has been created, it can be enhanced. Advanced software programs allow the image to be rotated, cropped, duplicated and also add special effects, like 3D depth and shadowing. Stitches can be added or removed and colors changed to really perfect the digitized file.

Loading Your Design

Now the perfected digitized file will be loaded onto the embroidery machine. Various embroidery machines have different ways to loading the file, but the more common ones are via cables, CD, USB, or even special memory cards.

Fabric Stabilization

Stabilization is required to avoid wrinkling and other stitching problems. Each machine will have it's own way of stabilizing the fabric. This often involves placing additional material underneath and around the garment to secure it. Also, the garment can be tied-down during the stitching, through hooping around the edges

Embroidering the Image

After the stabilization process has been done, the thread colors will be loaded and the embroidery machine will begin stitching. The embroidering needs to be carefully monitored. Before this starts, the machine will be programmed to stitch in a certain color sequence and speed.

Finishing

Once the garment has been completed it will be checked thoroughly to make sure that it has been finished to the highest standard and the backing and any excess threads tidied up.
