Jewelry Trends at the 2009 Oscars

By Jane Anani

Statement pieces were the order of the day from stars on the 2009 Oscar red carpet. Few chose to wear bracelets, rings, necklaces and earrings together, instead most chose to wear either a statement wrist cuff or necklace to maximize the glamour without looking overdone.

Perhaps with a nod to the current financial recession the celebrities certainly seemed to be focusing on a single signature piece instead of piling on the bling. In terms of colors and designs, silver seemed to be the front runner in the fashion stakes rather than gold. This gives fans a great opportunity to copy the latest red carpet looks at a fraction of the price.

The message from the Oscars seems to be wear one key piece of jewelry, with very very simple styling, not beaded, and classic rather than edgy. The stars seemed to have been advised to wear either a necklace or a bracelet but not both!

Kate Winslett lead the way with a simple but elegant bracelet with diamond earrings. Supporting actress nominee Taraji P Henson just wore a stunning diamond cuff-style necklace in what appeared to be a flower design.

In contrast, Heidi Klum seemed to get the look wrong and over did it with multiple ladies bracelets and very large sweeping earrings which curved around her face.

Celebrities always want their designer dresses to do all the talking, there were a lot of understated earrings, in button rather than drop styles. Button style earrings always enhance the overall look, but don't distract from the dress. One star who stepped out wearing the exception to the simple earrings of her contemporaries was Angelina Jolie. Angelina chose to wear large vibrant Fred Leighton emerald drop earrings and a matching emerald cocktail ring. In keeping with the trend though, she appeared without necklace or bracelets so retained a cool, classic look.

For men designer jewellery and decoration, apart from cuff-links, are barely noticeable - we didn't spot any mens bracelets. Brad Pitt did show off some fancy metallic shirt buttons, and a few other male celebrities chose to wear a simple silver brooch on their tuxedo lapels.

However the jewelry talking point of the night had to be Mickey Rourke's choker style mens necklace. Nominated for Best Actor for his role in The Wrestler, Rourke stepped out onto the Oscar red carpet wearing a pendant around his neck bearing a photo of the his deceased pet Loki the chihuahua, along with his off-white Jean Paul Gaultier tuxedo and open-necked shirt.
