Jerry Garcia Neckties

By Jeremy Longtrain

Best known as the guitarist of Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia is also a talented visual artist. Despite all his musical projects, which include four other bands besides Grateful Dead, he still has time to draw and paint. And both are done beautifully.

He has been drawing and painting since he was young but he never really got to do much. That was until he joined an art course at the San Francisco Art Institute. During that short course, he met Wally Hedrick, his teacher and a renowned artist during the 60's. Wally Hedrick encouraged him to continue on painting and drawing.

If he wasn't onstage with one of his bands, he was most likely on art exhibits of his own works, which he peddles all over the United States. He has made about 500 paintings and sketches and about a thousand lithographs by the time of his death in August 1995.

Even years after his death, his amazing gift in handling the guitar has never been forgotten. So much so that Rolling Stones dubbed him as the 13th Greatest Guitarists of All Time. But his visual talent has escaped the limelight.

Jerry Garcia-inspired neckties serve as a tribute to his visual skills and the dent he's making on the world of visual arts. Heavily based on his sketches and paintings that are at many times dream-like, wearing one may be similar to carrying a genuine Jerry Garcia visual art wherever you go. It can serve as an interesting conversation piece, much like Jerry Garcia's own surreal works.
