A Quick Body Armor Rundown

By Jacob Williams

Body armor is now starting to show up in everyday life. Many different types of vests and jackets can offer a variety of exposure and protection levels. Celebrities, business CEO's, and athletes are additions to the bulletproof jacket market. Here are some examples:

Concealable

Tactical Use

Police Uses

Army

K-9

Ladies

Every bulletproof jacket manufactured is tested to meet the current highest standards. The protection of the vest depends on its type, size, class, and most importantly the projectile fired at it. The body armor works by stopping the bullet from penetrating the materials that are constructed of tightly woven fibers. When the bullet is stopped suddenly the energy is absorbed mostly by the body but also by the vest materials. This energy is spread out over a large area and can create a bruise after several hours. Internal injuries can occur depending on caliber and range the individual is struck.

Bulletproof vests can also be purchased with a rifle plate options. These plates make the vest heavier but they can stop many high caliber rifle rounds very easily. These are critical for military and swat team applications.

Everyday the technology with bulletproof vests is improving. The Govt. has been researching light weight synthetic fibers. To be an improvement they will stop high caliber rifle rounds and be light and flexible enough to be effective. Most everyone can wear large rifle plates but this really cuts into your agility and speed. If there was perfect body armor, it would be like a t-shirt and be able to stop a large caliber rifle round.

Several police departments across the USA are mandated to supply their employees with bulletproof jackets. The government has set aside funding for this, so check with your department and make sure they are supplying you with bulletproof vests.

Bulletproof vests laws are very odd. Anyone can own body armor unless they are a convicted felon or they are intending to commit a crime. Body armor can not be sold to Connecticut residents unless the sale is made face to face. Those are the only rules, so get out there and get yourself a bulletproof vest, and be safe.
