Purchase Your Wedding Dress With These 10 Tips

By Anne Michaels

The majority of women have been planning their wedding day since they were little girls. One of the most important parts of making that dream come true is a great dress. Every woman wants to feel like a princess on her wedding day. Unfortunately, shopping for a wedding gown can make your dream feel a lot more like a chore. If you want to find the perfect gown for your wedding without a lot of stress, here are some tips.

First, make sure you give yourself plenty of time to pick out a dress that's flattering, as well as to have alterations done to make it fit perfectly. Remember to take someone else with you when you try gowns on. Once you've put on a lot of dresses, you'll lose the ability to tell which ones look best.

It's important to make sure that the person who accompanies you on your shopping trip will be honest about how you look. Choose someone who'll help you find a flattering dress, and tell you if you've picked one that doesn't look so good.

Collect pictures before you make an appointment, so you'll have a good idea what type of gowns you prefer. It's also a good idea to find out your figure shape and what flatters it before you go shopping. That will allow you to rule out types of wedding dresses that don't look good on your shape.

Choose your price range well in advance, and make sure you stick to it. Sales people can be enthusiastic, but don't let them talk you into a dress you can't afford. Brides looking for budget wedding dresses should take a look in second hand stores, order online, or choose a simpler dress that will be less costly.

Remember to think about more than looks. After all, you'll be wearing your wedding dress for most of the day, and it should be comfortable to wear. Don't buy a gown that's itchy, rides up, or pinches, because it'll be hard to wear after an hour or more.

Book an appointment with a seamstress early, so that she'll know your dress is coming for alterations. Your gown should never be finished in a rush. That's more expensive and means your risk of a poor fit is higher.

It's important to pick your dress according to where and when you'll be married. A long train is an acceptable indoor choice, but will pick up debris outside. Hot or cold weather should be dressed for accordingly - you'll be happier and more comfortable in the long run.

Remember to be realistic about sizing. While most of us expect to diet for our wedding day, this can be harder than it sounds. Remember to pick a size that you'll be able to comfortably fit into, even if it's not your ideal.

It's a lot easier to have a wedding dress taken in if you do lose more weight than expected than it is to have it let out. However, after alterations have been made, it's vital to stop dieting.

Last and most important, don't allow shopping for your wedding dress to make you stressed out. You should be having fun trying on all the wedding dresses there are to see, not feeling tired. Your gown should make you feel beautiful - if you're finding it isn't doing that, it's time to take a break.
