Business Travel Luggage Packing Guide

By Grace Jennings

Travel has changed dramatically over the past few years. Even if you're a regular business traveler it's important to keep up with the ever-changing airport rules and regulations. Be sure you understand them before you even leave home.

While it's not so much a concern for casual vacationers, many business travelers are taking advantage of the special designated checkpoint lanes to get through security quicker. Now available under certain conditions at many of the larger airports, this security option means a bit less hassle for the frequent traveler.

Electronic Devices And Business Travel Luggage

Business travelers probably carry more electronic devices than the average person so it's necessary to understand what's allowed. Generally speaking, items such as cell phones, laptops, pagers, PDAs, cameras and GPS units can all be carried on the plane with you or checked in your business travel luggage. Laptops are required to go through security outside of their carrying case.

Do take special precautions with you camera film as the security screening equipment can cause damage to your undeveloped photos. It's always best to request the security screener to inspect your camera equipment bags by hand and bypass the X-ray scanner to avoid damage to your film.

What About Sports Equipment?

As you know, business is not always conducted at the office. This is especially true on a business trip. It's very likely you play a round of golf with a client or get in some tennis for exercise while you're away from home.

Most sporting goods fall outside the carry-on size restrictions and cannot be brought on the plane with you. Items like golf clubs and ski poles are simply too large and must be checked. Other items that are potentially dangerous such as a baseball bat also must be checked. But you'll be able to pack smaller, less dangerous items such as golf balls, for example into your carry on luggage if you wish.

Are Personal Items Allowed?

When you're traveling you need to take all the personal items you would normally use at home with you. Unlike those on vacation, you're away working and need to look polished and professional at all times.

In order to check or carry on personal items, they must hold 3 ounces of liquid or less. If you're ever in doubt as to current restrictions, call your local airport and make a quick check before you trip.
